ASL Nomination of Officers

Dear Colleague:

As a Past President and current Board Member of the Alpha Sigma Lambda Honor Society, I am writing to request your assistance as we build our Society.  We now have several Board openings and seek your input in nominating candidates.  I also encourage you to consider serving as a Board member.

ASL’s commitment to the adult learner is even more important today than ever before.  Adult students seeking to advance their education are not only struggling with the multiple priorities of home, family and work; they are constrained by financial limitations that are growing worse in today’s economy.  Our scholarship program is growing and has become a key focus for the Society.  National figures show that part-time adult students received only 2 percent of scholarships offered.  ASL is one of very few scholarship providers.  As a committed adult educator, I encourage you to support our continuing efforts to meet the needs of our adult students.

We currently seek nominations for the following Board of Directors positions:  Secretary, Treasurer and Member-at-Large.  Enclosed  you will find a description of the positions that will be open as of January 1, 2013, and a Nomination Form to be completed and mailed or faxed to the ASL Home Office at Eastern Illinois University by no later than October 1, 2012.

You are encouraged to nominate yourself as well as friends and colleagues who are willing to serve.  Nominees must be current or a past Chapter Councilor.  The commitment is for two years of renewable service.  Board members are expected to contribute their time and talent.  Expenses not covered by home institutions are generally paid by ASL up to an established maximum.  Typically the Board meets face-to-face twice a year in October/November and early June.  There is usually a mid-year conference call, and there may be some committee work which is generally conducted by phone.

I hope you will consider this opportunity seriously.  It most definitely will reaffirm your commitment to the adult learner and it could change your career.  If you need more information, I would be happy to receive your emails.  I may be contacted at pbrown@email.wcu.edu.  Thank you very much.

Sincerely,

Patricia Brown, Ph.D
Immediate Past President
