Karen Garver was featured in the Spring 2006 Midnight Oil as a recipient of the William C. Hine Distinguished Service Award. Karen has continued adding to her collection as she was selected to receive the Association for Continuing Higher Education's Emeritus Award. Karen will receive the award at the 2006 ACHE conference in Las Angeles in late October. The Midnight Oil congratulates Karen and takes an opportunity to run her Spring 2006 award story again. Karen expresses, " I think that emeritus is also how I feel about ASL... I continue to be most grateful for the William C. Hine Award which is displayed in my office."
Karen Garver has been an academic adviser with the Division of Continuing Studies at the University of Nebraska at Omaha for the past 24 years. In 1990 she succeeded in getting Eta Beta chapter of Alpha Sigma Lambda established and arranged the founding initiation. She continued as the national councilor into 2005, finding a great deal of pleasure in providing this opportunity for adult students to be honored for their academic excellence. On November 1, 2005, she became a halftime adviser and handed over her duties for Alpha Sigma Lambda to a fellow adviser.
She was fortunate enough to be able to attend all the national meetings while she was the national councilor. She assisted with the establishment of two other chapters in Nebraska. She believes that her letter in support of the UNO program for Alpha Sigma Lambda helped widen the possibilities for other institutions which were not just evening or otherwise separate programs. She has found all these activities very rewarding. She says, “It was a very great honor to receive the William C. Hine Distinguished Service Award for doing things I so enjoyed.”
