As we honor the important contributors to the success of the ASL National Office in this issue, it seems fitting that we also take the time to highlight several of our many local chapters who have flourished from similar dedication and generosity of their own members and National Councilors. These chapters exemplify a true spirit of giving and creativity. They utilize their time and talent in many worthwhile ways, from charities to cookbooks to cyberspace. By “doing good anyway”, they enrich not only their campus communities, but also the wider world beyond.
Stonehill CollegeBeta Xi - Stonehill College MA is using the internet to connect with busy students. Pat Brinegar from Beta Xi writes, "Our electronic election was the most successful election we have had in the 12 years I have been advisor. Participation was excellent, particularly when considering there were a few bugs the first time around. Our chat room is now in the site held by the election process. We developed the chat room because we get few attendees at our meetings - mostly because of the time commitment - and this is a way for them to participate. We expect to put it into full practice beginning Fall Semester. We are a digital society and if we can connect best electronically that is the direction we will take. Members will be able to chat with each other, sell text books, meet with study buddies, etc. We are very excited about it." |

Sigma Rho – Texas Women’s UniversitySigma Rho – Texas Women’s University inducted thirty students from all three of its campuses at its induction this Spring. The university’s main campus in Denton is 25 miles away from the Parkland campus and 200 miles from the Houston campus, so this induction was especially meaningful. The Parkland campus has a nursing program. The chapter usually doesn't have nursing students involved with it but this year two nursing students are among the officers. The officers are: President, Yvetta Limon; Vice-President, Carrie Baysinger; Secretary, Rebecca Gribble; Treasurer, Courtney Jones; Graduate Rep, Cathleen Brazile; Parkland Campus Rep, Robert Beck; and Houston Campus Rep, Melody Gassoway. Former president Janice Fowler stays involved with the chapter. She writes, “the other campuses had not heard of ASL. Now we are going to do information booths there and also set up the Internet discussion groups. The graduate officer is for alumni. We keep up with them and [ask them to encourage] other students. The alumni also agree to sponsor the induction for the incoming group." |
New ASL Chapters since last issue:Each year, Alpha Sigma Lambda establishes a goal for the number of chapters it hopes to add. We are proud to announce that 2004 saw the second largest growth in chapters since 1995. Fifteen new chapters were added this year; five more than the expected goal of ten chapters. We also welcomed our 300th chapter, Western Carolina State. ASL also added a new state to the list of members: Wyoming. In addition, four previous chapters returned to active status during the 2004 academic year. We applaud each of these new chapters and their representatives for their dedication to the adult students on their campuses.
