Chapter News/Activities/Inductions - Fall 2005

As we move into the 60th year of ASL history and scholarship, here are some "snapshot" moments that have taken place recently at several member chapters. The chain of learning and accomplishment continues to grow and encircle ever more adult scholars.

University of Massachusetts Lowell

UMass ASLAchieving a 3.8 grade point average is no easy task. So imagine attaining that level of success while juggling a full-time job and raising a family – and you'll start to appreciate why being inducted in the Alpha Sigma Lambda National Honor Society is such an accomplishment for adult students who are pursing their degrees part time.

"ASL provides a truly prestigious opportunity to recognize the special achievements of adult students who accomplish academic excellence while facing competing interests of family, work and community," said Pauline Carroll, Director of Enrollment Management and Administration for Continuing Studies.

UMassIn total, the University of Massachusetts Lowell 's Division of Continuing Studies and Corporate Education welcomed 60 adult students into the Alpha Sigma Lambda National Honor Society on Tuesday evening, April 12 as part of the celebration dinner held at Alumni Library.

"It's quite an honor to be inducted into the Alpha Sigma Lambda National Honor Society and to be recognized for all the hard work and effort you put into your education," said Phil Caruso, an inductee who is working towards his Bachelor's Degree in Information Technology and taking all of his classes online. "It was my first actual visit to UMass Lowell since entering the Information Technology degree two years ago, and the staff and faculty members made me feel right at home."

UMass ASL2The Alpha Sigma Lambda National Honor Society was established in 1946 to honor superior scholarship and leadership in adult students. To qualify for the Honor Society, adult students must be in the top 10 percent of their class – which for this year's class equates to achieving a 3.8 GPA or higher. The Alpha Sigma Lambda National Honor Society is the oldest and largest chapter-based honor society for adult students, with chapters at over 250 colleges and universities throughout the United States . For non-traditional students, the society stands as an inspiration for continued scholastic growth, a builder of pride through recognition and an invitation to associate with similarly motivated students.

Loyola University Chicago

Loyola University Chicago ASLThis year, the School of Professional Studies, which offers a Bachelor of Arts degree in Leadership and Organizational Development, as well as several Post Baccalaureate Certificates for adult students, reinstated its Alpha Theta chapter at Loyola University Chicago in order to recognize its top students.

We are happy to share with you that our recent induction ceremony which was held on May 6, 2005 was a beautiful event.  Students' guests included parents, grandparents and children who came to support and honor them for their accomplishments.  Dean Robert Hasenstab presided over the ceremony which was a special moment for him, as well as the inductees, since he was to be retiring at the end of May. The ceremony was also a wonderful event for us because some of our inductees were to be the first graduates from our adult program. We were delighted to induct 12 students.

"You've done it the hard way, year after year, semester after semester," Guy C. Colarulli, associate provost and dean of undergraduate studies, told the newly inducted students.

Malone College

Malone CollegeMalone College, in Canton, Ohio, is a Christian college for the arts, sciences, and professions in the liberal arts tradition. The mission of the School of Continuing Studies at Malone is to deliver quality education through diversified programs that integrate faith and learning to meet the needs of the life-long student. One program through which the mission is accomplished is an accelerated degree completion program for adult students known as the Malone College Management Program (MCMP).

The staff and faculty wanted to recognize the accomplishments of the students in MCMP as they attend school, attend to their careers, and attend to their families. In March 2004, Malone College established the Mu Upsilon chapter of ASL. In addition to the national criteria for membership eligibility, MCMP students are required to write an essay in which they discuss their beliefs concerning their moral obligations to the academic community, workplace, and civic community and how they have actualized these beliefs.

On April 29, 2005, Malone held its second induction ceremony for eighteen new members. The ceremony consisted of dinner for the inductees and their guests, followed by the induction ritual. It was attended by the President of Malone College and the Provost, in addition to staff and faculty from the School of Continuing Studies.

Membership in ASL is highly prized by MCMP students. The office receives many calls from students until the names are announced. Mu Upsilon is an honorary society currently. As the chapter grows, the goal is to become more actively involved on campus with adult-student participation in ASL-sponsored events.

New ASL Chapters since last issue:

Each year, Alpha Sigma Lambda establishes a goal for the number of chapters it hopes to add. We are proud to announce that 2004 saw the second largest growth in chapters since 1995. We applaud each of these new chapters and their representatives for their dedication to the adult students on their campuses.
