Chapter News/Activities/Inductions - Spring 2004 and Earlier

University of Missouri - Kansas City

Lambda Pi, University of Missouri - Kansas City has officially adopted Disney Dive-In as a traditional event sponsored by our chapter.  It will be held ever October and February to serve students and community with families.  We work with our recreation center to open the pool to the community from 7-9pm (usually on a Thursday).  UMKC students, faculty, staff and community members bring their children to enjoy swimming in the pool.  We offer free pool toys  for the kids that they get to take home, and we show a Disney film or series of cartoons on a screen at the edge of the pool!  It’s a lot of fun – and a great way to get families involved in campus life at UMKC.

We also hope to continue and expand our community service efforts and build a solid core membership that attend and participate in social and community service activities.

This honor society continues to struggle with consistent attendance and support at events and meetings, simply due to the busy lifestyle of non-traditional students.  We have learned to gauge the success of our events by the impact they have on those who attend instead of on attendance numbers.  We sincerely believe that every little bit helps, so whatever we can do, no matter how small, to improve the life of a non-traditional student at UMKC is worth our time and effort.  I look forward to another successful year, many new members and ideas, and the opportunity to impact the UMKC campus community in new and creative ways.

As the Advisor to such a unique organization, I continue to be challenged by the students I work with and by the responsibility of advising an organization dedicated to the betterment of non-traditional students.  My other roles at the University of Missouri-Kansas City involve working with traditionally aged students and advising the campus programming board, so my interactions with the Lambda Pi Chapter of Alpha Sigma Lambda have brought many new experiences and learning opportunities.  The chapter is currently in search of a new President, and we hope to have a new President in place by the beginning of the Fall Semester.  - Anthony Kappa, Chapter Counselor

Baldwin-Wallace College (OH)

Baldwin-Wallace College (OH) uses its chapter to sponsor faculty recognition. The members set up the criteria and distribute nominations among all evening and weekend students. They also select the winners, one full time and one adjunct, and present the awards at the final faculty meeting of the school year. The winners each get an honorarium and their names on plaques. The winners are also asked to contribute to Best Practices, a teaching tips handbook for other instructors. They also speak at the annual fall induction.

In its first annual service project, Iota Eta Sigma – University of Mobile coordinated efforts to collect 43 shoeboxes of toys and healthcare items from the university’s adult students. Georgian Court College (NJ)

Sr. Dorothy Lazarick of Kappa Zeta – Georgian Court College (NJ) writes: “the induction ceremony for students and faculty at Georgian Court College took place on November 2, 2003. Twenty-two students were inducted and three faculty members were honored. Another added feature of this induction was that the son of one of the present members was also inducted . It is a first for us and it was an unexpected pleasure.

During the ceremony, a student was presented with the first scholarship award that Kappa Zeta has initiated. $500 is given each semester to a nontraditional undergraduate student or to a member of Kappa Zeta for undergraduate or graduate study at the college. Applications are distributed in April of each year. Funds for the award are obtained by students and their friends and spouses working the concession stand at a state Arts Center. The company allows each organization to earn 10% of whatever the intake is at that stand. This has become the best source of funds for us. The two concerts that we were assigned were Allman Brothers Band and Cosby, Stills and Nash. Last winter, the organization collected 400 pounds of coats for distribution. We have also given financial support to Eagle Scout projects.”
