A (Winning) Stitch in Time...

by Doris Hill

Just like our friends at Allegra Printing, The Winning Stitch, which provides the lovely embroidered logos and banners for our product line, is also a family-run operation.

Starting out small, in the basement of her home, owner Doris Hill's handiwork soon became so in demand that she persuaded her husband and father to refinish the rest of the basement to accommodate a larger working area. Along with the space came an extra embroidery machine, and soon Doris was hiring her first full-time employee. In a year's time, the small company could not keep up with the ever growing orders. Business was so good that Doris and her family had to pitch in once again ... this time by using their trusty tractor to help lower another needed piece of equipment down their basement stairs!

As business continued to expand and more employees were hired, Doris began serving Eastern Illinois University which later referred ASL office manager, Shirley Melton, to her. It was the beginning of a long and valued relationship. The beautiful handiwork of The Winning Stitch continues to please both the chapter councilors and the students themselves.

And nothing succeeds like success! From a one-woman operation in her home basement, Doris has "graduated" to a thriving location in a suburban Business Park with a staff of four under her supervision. The company has grown into a multi-faceted operation which now includes tuxedo rentals and small alterations.

Doris is very grateful for the opportunity to serve the ASL National Office and thinks that the Honor Society has played an important role in helping The Winning Stitch become such a productive and successful enterprise. ASL, in turn, wants to thank Doris and her hard-working staff for their years of dedication to the Society.
