Spring 2007 Edition

President's Message

Pat Brown, ASL PresidentOver the past several weeks I have been reflecting on my opening words to you as the new President of Alpha Sigma Lambda. In preparation, I pulled out former messages from past presidents Ray Campbell and George Rogers, the history of the society and notes from previous board meetings. I come into this position with a legacy of support from past officers, the staff at the home office and all of you who serve our adult students.

At the same time I was gathering my thoughts for this letter, I was also planning for our home campus's ASL induction ceremony. Ours is a relatively new chapter. We were chartered in 2004 and this spring will be our third induction ceremony. It then struck me how much I have learned from you. Your experiences have helped us shape our chapter and how we recognize and engage our students. You are the backbone of the Society! It is your spirit, passion and commitment to serving the adult learner that keeps the Society alive and vital. This newsletter is but one way we can share and build on those experiences.

As we look to the future we will increasingly be looking to you for guidance and support. We are planning now for our fall board and business meetings that will be held in conjunction with the 69th ACHE meeting in Roanoke Virginia. We hope that you will be able to join us. Your leadership is important to us. We have set our sights on expanded growth of the Society. We find though, the adult student is no longer defined by academic unit or program as they were in the early history of the Society. As we chart our future we need to explore new ways of defining the structures of the Society and how we can best serve you and our adult learners. Many challenges lie ahead but they are balanced with great opportunities to widen our support of adult learners.

I look forward to serving as your Society President and thank you in advance for your support.

Sincerely,
Patricia A. Brown
President
