Shaneka S. Sanders

2018 Alpha Sigma Lambda Scholarship Recipient Shaneka S. Sanders

I am a divorced mother of 2 boys. I started my journey to obtaining my college degree almost 19 years ago when I graduated high school. I went off to college but had to return to help my mother during a difficult time in her life. It was during this time I had my first son. Because I had to work to support myself and my son I lost focus on school for a short period. I made the decision to return after he was a little older and was able to obtain an associates degree but I knew this wasn’t my stopping point.

I desired more and knew my purpose would require me to continue my education.

I attempted to return to school but my mother became ill and I had to help take care of her because she could no longer work. It was during this time of my mothers’ recovery that I got married and returned to school. However, the marriage didn’t last and I had to leave school once again. After time had passed I was able to start attending Strayer University and was excelling in all my classes. Because of my many attempts of trying to complete my degree, my financial aid sources were exhausted and I was forced into having to pay for school out of pocket. Here I was almost complete and now I may have to quit because I can’t afford the tuition, books or fees. It was during this time I was chosen to be inducted into the Alpha Sigma Lambda Honor Society.

With this, I was informed of a scholarship opportunity that could potentially help me to pay for the last 4 classes I had remaining to obtain my degree. I applied and was selected. This was one of the most rewarding things ever to happen in my life. I now had the resources needed to finish college and obtain the bachelor’s degree I desired and set out for 19 years ago.

Determination, dedication and the will to never quit helped me to reach my goal as well as organizations like Alpha Sigma Lambda which I am a proud member. Thank You!
