Nylisha was born and raised in the Bronx, New York, Nylisha first began working with children as young as age three as a Martial Arts Instructor. Whilst studying Dietetics and Nutrition at Bronx Community College, Nylisha became a member of the National Society of Leadership and Success. After obtaining her Associate’s Degree and spending a semester away from home to gain new knowledge, she returned to New York to study at the City College of New York’s Center for Worker Education, where she is currently an Early Childhood Education Major with a concentration in History, Politics, and Society.
Nylisha is expected to graduate with a Bachelors Degree of Science in Spring 2020 and plans to continue her education to earn her Masters and Doctorate degree. Nylisha believes in the power of mentorship and leading by example. She believes that with hard work, perseverance, a strong mindset, and making the most out of every opportunity anything is possible.
Moreover, Nylisha believes in being hands-on, getting involved, and giving back to marginalized communities like the one in which she grew up. Among her volunteer experience is her service as an effective organizer of World AIDS Day. In 2018, Nylisha was recognized for her academic achievement, making her a member of the Alpha Sigma Lambda National Honor Society.

Kappa Rho held a virtual induction ceremony for our two new members on Sunday, April 26, 2020, to honor and celebrate their academic achievements. We were joined via video chat by several Gonzaga University staff members, our two students inductees, and their friends and family.

I was born and raised in Chester, Pennsylvania, and after living in six other states in my adult life, I returned to Chester fifteen years ago to care for my aged mother. During my working years, I had several diverse professions, among them media coordinator, outside sales, medical secretary/transcriptionist, medical writer/editor, psychology case manager, and wildlife photographer.
Since my retirement, I have written an as-yet-to-be-published novel and have helped other writers with crafting their fiction. Currently I am a senior at Widener University, majoring in Liberal Studies and hoping to graduate in 2020. After graduation I plan to work toward a certificate in Teaching English as a Second Language, and possibly an MFA in creative writing. I have two sons and a stepson who live nearby and who have blessed me with three grandchildren.

Northwestern University School of Professional Studies, Alpha Sigma Lambda Alpha Chapter, holds an annual Alpha Sigma Lambda Honor Society Induction Ceremony and Reception. This year, The School of Professional Studies was proud and excited to recognize the achievements of 18 graduating students inducted into ASL Membership. Family, friends, and ASL Alumni were all present to celebrate the remarkable achievement of these students. At the ceremony, School of Professional Studies Associate Dean of Academic Affairs Seth Meisel, Associate Dean of Student and Alumni Services, Margaret McCarthy, and Assistant Dean of Undergraduate Programs, Dr. Peter Kaye, spoke about not only the honor of ASLmembership, but also the responsibility to inspire those around to their own academic achievements.

The Alpha Xi Chapter at Drury University in Springfield, Missouri, inducted 38 new members (18 in attendance) to Alpha Sigma Lambda on November 3, 2019. ASL member and Drury alum/staff member, Yesy Perez, shared her story of overcoming others’ limitations for her and becoming the leader she is today. 2020-2021 Scholarships: The deadline for chapter councilors to submit scholarship applications to the ASLHS home office has been extended to May 31, 2020. We are currently developing a version of the scholarship application that can be completed online and saved. Applicants are to follow the instructions of the chapter councilor when submitting their applications for consideration. As a student, there comes a time you may need to request letters of recommendation from a faculty member. For example, the Alpha Sigma Lambda scholarship application asks for a letter of recommendation. Beyond that, you may need letters of recommendation for graduate schools, job applications, and more. Below are some tips for you to consider when you need to request a letter of recommendation.
Reach out to faculty who you recently took classes with. Remind them who you are- what grade you received, and anything else that may have stuck out (for example, the topic of your final paper or project, or if there were online discussions, how frequently or early you posted.)
Mention a few things about yourself – what your educational and professional goals are, what your other responsibilities are in addition to taking classes.
Clarify that the recommendation is meant to portray the type of student you are- which a faculty member can usually speak to from your behavior in their course.
Offer to provide additional information if the faculty member feels it would be useful.
Give the faculty a few weeks to complete the letter…don’t ask the week it is due.
Ask a few faculty members for recommendations. So that if one or more don’t feel comfortable giving one, you don’t have to start the process over. It does not hurt to end up with more than one recommendation.
For the Alpha Sigma Lambda Scholarship: Remind the faculty that the recommendation can be sent via email using their faculty email address (this alleviates any worry of having to use the school’s letterhead, which can be difficult for some non-local faculty to obtain).
Keep these tips in mind as you reach out for letters of recommendation. Also, if you know now that you plan to attend graduate school or go into a field that requires faculty references, start now to develop relationships with your faculty members while you are in their class. Being an active student in discussions, helping other students, and chatting with the faculty member (whether online or on-site) may help down the road when you need that reference.

The DePaul-School for New Learning, Delta Lambda Pi (DePaul Leaders and Professionals) held its 17th Annual Induction Ceremony, Saturday, May19, 2019. The theme this year was “when life challenges you”. This theme was inspired by a quote from Alana Stewart saying, “No matter what kind of challenges or difficulties or painful situations you go through in your life, we all have something deep within us that we can reach down and find the inner strength to get through them.” SNL Inductees took to heart to examine learning opportunities presented by life’s challenges, and then make the ultimate decision to shift to their inner cheerleader. Associate Dean for SNL Operations, Dr. Akilah Martin was the key note. Interim Dean and ASL Director, Dr. Donald L. Opitz congratulated and held individual photo-ops with inductees and Chapter Councilor, Leyfane J. Thomas, President Stephen Hall and ASL Alumni, Lisa Tolefree, offered separate congratulatory words of encouragement. The Chapter Councilor also chimed a bell at inductee roll call.

The University of Mobile’s Iota Eta Sigma (in His service) chapter celebrated our 17th year by adding nine new inductees, including one honorary faculty member, Dr. Karen Dennis from our School of Education. Dr. Pamela Buchanan Miller, long-time chapter counselor and advocate for adult students at UM led the induction, and one of our two 2019 national ASL scholarship members, Tanika Woodard, presented candidates with their certificates of membership. The reception that followed was attended by 60+ friends and family celebrating their members’ accomplishments.
