I began this journey, not knowing what to expect or how far I could go. I even questioned where education would lead me or if it was the right decision. One day I decided to let the fear go. I wanted a better life not only for me but for my children.
In 2012 I went through a drastic change in my life. After 14 years, I removed myself from a very abusive marriage and decided that I would work hard to better my children’s lives. After 12 years of being a stay at home mother, I didn’t know where to start, and I was scared. I had to figure out what was next and how I could survive post marriage. It was hard, and for the first four years, I moved every year because of financial reasons. Nothing was working so in 2016 after moving again I decided to enroll in college. It was hard because I didn’t want the financial responsibility that came with college, but at this point, I didn’t have an option; minimum wage was not enough to take care of my children.
Today, I am a senior at Columbia College, pursuing my Bachelor’s degree in Human Resource Management.
Thanks to the venture I embarked on with Columbia College, I am accomplishing something that I never thought I could. Today I am not where I want to be, but I am not where I used to be, and that is an accomplishment for me. I am currently a full-time working mother and an honor student. I am grateful to the Alpha Sigma Lambda Honor Society for opportunities that are in place to help students like me.
I am writing with a hope to encourage someone else that does not believe in themselves or the impact that education can have on their lives. I have never been this open about my life, but I hope to encourage someone. It’s not going to be easy, but I can say that it is not impossible. Anything you put your mind to is achievable, and it cannot happen until you take away the fear by deciding to begin the journey.
I’m so thankful that God put people in this world that care about others like Alpha Sigma Lambda Honor Society and the many professors that have touched my life. Now I am working hard towards everything I need while thanking God for everything I have. We may not know each other, but I believe in you, and you should believe in yourself too.
Alpha Sigma Lambda Honor Society is committed to helping students like Maranda achieve their dreams!
